Dr. Bradley Smith BRADLEY E. SMITH, M. D.

PROFESSOR OF ANESTHESIOLOGY, EMERITUS
VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

Bradley Smith was Chair of the Vanderbilt University Department of Anesthesiology for 24 years, after service on the faculties of Yale and the University of Miami. At Columbia University he was the worlds first Obstetric Anesthesia Fellow. Subsequently he served on committees of the National Research Council, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Residency Review Committee for Anesthesiology. He was a “National Faculty Member” of the CPR program of the American Heart Association for eight years and a member of the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention Advisory Panel for Anesthesiology for 10 years.

He has been President of the Tennessee Society of Anesthesiologists, the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology, the Society for Computers in Anesthesiology, and the Anesthesia History Association.Since 2008 he has been a Trustee of the Wood Library-Museum of Anesthesiology. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the American Society of Anesthesiologists [ASA] for 14 years, and was General Chairman of the 1996 ASA Annual Meeting.

His personal research has received support from the National Institutes of Health, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and several major pharmaceutical industry grants. He has presented over 300 invited lectures including 48 U. S. and 24 foreign universities. He has served on the Editorial Boards of several national and international journals, and continues on three currently.

In recent years he has produced and directed 39 Living History of Anesthesia feature films for the WLM website, and has been chair of the Task Force for the Preservation of SOAP History. He is currently also Medical Director and part owner of an anesthesiology related business management corporation.
