GEORGE S. BAUSE, M.D., M.P.H.

As the 1975-76 Andrew Mutch Scholar to Scotlands University of Edinburgh, Dr. Bause earned physics honors before returning to Pennsylvanias Ursinus College for his B.S. cum laude (Biophysics, 1977).
An Evers Zepp Scholar, he earned simultaneously his M.P.H. (Epidemiology) and M.D. in 1981 at Johns Hopkins University before completing an anesthesiology residency there. Specializing in the aging of the patient and in the aging of the specialty, Dr. Bause drafted Americas first geriatric anesthesia fellowship (1984-85, Hopkins-NIH) while curating anesthesia departmental museums at Johns Hopkins and later at Yale.
Since 1987, as a professor from Yale and then Case Western Reserve University, Dr. Bause has curated the American Society of Anesthesiologists Wood Library-Museum of Anesthesiology. Dubbed Anesthesias Indiana Jones, he has (legally) smuggled or shipped anesthetic antiquities back to the WLM from all seven continents. At international meetings in the United Kingdom. France, Ireland, Greece, South Africa, Argentina, Austria, and Australia, he has presented multiple worlds firsts in the history of anesthesia, including the first anesthesia journal, the first unidisciplinary professorship in anesthesia, and the first postgraduate school in anesthesia.
Among his 400-plus publications, the most popular are the Anesthesiology Reflections that Dr. Bause composes as an associate editor for Anesthesiology. He has served also as a guest editor for the Bulletin of Anesthesia History and Anesthesia and Analgesia. A member of the Triple Nine Society, National Eagle Scout Association, American Osler Society, and Academy of Anesthesiology, Dr. Bause has been honored as a fellow by ten international societies.
