Merlin D. Larson, M.D. studied at Stanford University and the National Institutes of Health. Following his anesthesia training, he was Chairman of the Department of Anesthesia at French Hospital, San Francisco and Clinical Instructor at the University of California, San Francisco.

In 1989 he joined the full time faculty at the University of California, San Francisco where he served as Professor of Anesthesiology and Peri-Operative Medicine and Chief of the Acute Pain Service at Mount Zion Hospital. He is currently Professor Emeritus at the University of California, San Francisco. He has written and lectured extensively on the History of Anesthesia.
